When the Fridge Dies

Murphy’s Law says that anything that can go wrong will go wrong, and whatever happens is always right when it’s the most inconvenient. Picture this: you’ve been gone a few days. You open the fridge and it's warm. Your food is questionable at best, and rotten at worst. Surprise, your fridge went out. Hooray!

But now what do you do? Keep reading to learn more.

Here's what you need to know:

Check if it's under warranty.

If you're in a new build, most builders have a 12-month or other warranty period from when you close, and you should take advantage of this.

If you're out of the builder warranty period, check if your appliance is still under the manufacturer's warranty and reach out for the follow-up steps to get your fridge replaced. If your fridge is newer, don’t lose money if you can help it. Use those warranties before you do anything else!

Duct Tape It Shut.

Get the fridge closed up and ready for transport. You're losing all of the food anyway, save your own garbage can from the rotten food and keep everything inside the fridge to take to the dump. If you have magnets or other decor, take them off to save them.

Spray Paint DNO.

This is pretty common sense. Spraying DNO (do not open) lets anyone who might open your fridge know that they really don't want to.

Take it to the Landfill.

The most annoying part (other than the whole losing your entire fridge thing) of your fridge going out is hauling it to the landfill. If you don't have a truck, you have to find one to borrow or rent one from U-Haul, you have to find people to help lift it, find time to go when the dump is open, etc. It's a lot of work and can take up a lot of time.

That’s it! Having a fridge go out is the worst, but knowing what to do if it happens can make your life a lot simpler when the time comes.
